We are one of the oldest jazz association in Czech Republic. Slaný is a small historical town with very rich cultural tradition and situated about 30 kms from Prague. We are pleased you found us on the web and we believe you´ll find here the information you´re searching for.

Jazz came to Slaný shortly after WW II, when a local teacher and amateur musician Vladimír Trsek had been listening radio and borrowed phonograph records of foreign jazz orchesters compositions. These he started to arrange with his various groups. An interest of dixieland and swing was truly contagious and led to foundation of jazz club in 1962.

   Slaný Jazz Days
Slaný Jazz Days (SJD) are the oldest musical festival in Czech Republic devoted to jazz and related genres like blues, spiritual or gospel. The first year of SJD took place in 24th January 1968. The festival is divided into four concerts. Two evening concerts with five or six groups are performed in The Town Centre Grand where is a large concert hall inside. It´s possible to drink and eat there – or just sit and listen at ease. Visitors also can watch an exhibition and visit midnight jam session as well. Another concerts take place in Town Theatre and baroque chapel from 17th century.

Main organizer of the festival is Jazz Club Slaný with is financially supported by Central Bohemia Region with governor Petr Bendl, Czech Musical Fund endowment and local sponsors. The festival introduces jazz from very roots and swing across a rich spectrum of subgenres and related styles to really modern jazz. Every year SJD offers a representative selection from Czech jazz scene and foreign groups as well.

During last years thre played pianist Rachel Z, Barbara Thompson´s Paraphernalia with Jon Hiseman, Byron Wallen Sound Advice, Rudy Linka - Miles Evans Quartet, Gilad Atzmon & The Orient House Ensemble, Christy Doran´s New Bag, Peter Schärli Special Sextet with trombonist Glenn Ferris and French horn player Tom Varner, a trumpet legend Benny Bailey, Steve Reid´s Nova Quartet, New York Trio Project, Jeff Siegel Quartet with Francesca Tanksley and Erica Lindsay, and also bluesmen Stan The Man with Betty S. and Canadians Marty Hall and Butch Coulter. Czech scene was represented for example by Jiří Stivín & Co., Rudolf Dašek Trio, Petr Kořínek Jazz Orchestra, Ondřej Havelka and Melody Makers, Karel Růžička, Milan Svoboda´s Kontraband, Ferdinand Havlík´s Swingband, Jana Koubková, Spirituál Kvintet, Dan Bárta and many more.

   Jazz Evenings
Regular jazz concerts are performed every third Friday in each month (except summer holidays) in Dividýlko Club in newly restored hall for cca 80 people. Some Jazz Evenings exceptionally take place in Town Theatre or baroque chapel. In the club perform mainly Czech groups of all jazz and related genres. Jazz Club Slaný also organized concerts in cooperation with British Council, e.g. famous British saxophonists Andy Sheppard, John Surman and last was Trevor Watts Duo.
